Eugene W. Buenger, 90, of Tripoli, died Friday, March 21, 2025, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Tripoli. Military rites will be provided at 12:30 PM at the funeral home on Saturday.

Eugene Willis, son of Otto and Marie (Rosen) Buenger was born on February 26, 1935, at the family’s home in Fremont Township, rural Bremer County. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church-Artesian. Gene received his education in the Tripoli School System and graduated from Tripoli High School in 1953. He served in the United States Army from January 14, 1955, until being honorably discharged in October of 1956. During his service, Gene was stationed in Germany. On November 14, 1959, he was united in marriage with Margaret Nitardy at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Toeterville. To this union three sons were born, Greg, James, and Mark. Gene began his professional career at Buhr Chevrolet in Tripoli, later working at Waterloo Steel, Bopp Manufacturing, Brent Manufacturing, and was a financial comptroller at Operation Threshold, where he retired in 2000. In addition, he operated an Income Tax Service for nearly fifty years and owned and operated Gem-T, Inc a greenhouse that grew hydroponic plants. Gene was very involved in the Tripoli Community, serving on City Council, Mayor, was a long time member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he served on Church Council. He enjoyed scroll saw woodworking, deer hunting, gardening, trips to Cedar Knoll Farm, camping, traveling (including trips to London, Paris, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and many areas in the United States), but his greatest joy was time spent with his family.

Gene is survived by his wife, Margaret of Tripoli; three sons, Greg (Kendra) Buenger of Charles City, James (Kimberly) Buenger of Sheldon, and Mark Buenger of Elk Point, South Dakota; grandchildren, Alex (Maggie Gill) Buenger, Torey (Corbin) Horner, Bailey Buenger, Matthew (Natalie) Buenger, Nathan Buenger and Madison Buenger; great-grandchildren, Kinsley Horner and Juliet Buenger; sister-in-law, Carolyn (Bruce) Gerdts of Saint Ansgar; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, Lorene (Edwin) Klemp, Lester (Evelyn) Buenger, and Donald (Betty) Buenger and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
