FERTILE, IOWA – A Northern Iowa Harley rider crashed his motorcycle Thursday evening outside Mason City near Fertile, and despite wearing no helmet, avoided catastrophic injury.
On March 13, 2025, at 6:37 PM, the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Fertile Fire Department, and Mason City Fire EMS responded to the intersection of Dogwood Avenue and 340th Street near Fertile for a personal injury motorcycle accident. The sheriff’s office says that 25-year-old Maxwell Shawn Johnson of Joice was driving a black 2005 Harley Davidson southbound on Dogwood Avenue. At the 340th Street intersection, the roadway transitions from pavement to gravel. Johnson failed to maintain control on the gravel and crashed.
As a result of the accident, Johnson suffered minor injuries from the crash. He was evaluated by EMS at the scene and released. The sheriff’s office pointed out that he was not wearing a helmet.
The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Fertile Fire Department and Mason City Fire Department EMS.
