Louie Feikes, 91, of Ackley, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2025 at his home near Ackley. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday, March 6, 2025 at the St. John’s United Church of Christ in Ackley. He will be laid to rest with military honors at the Oakwood Cemetery in Ackley. Woodley Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is caring for Louie and his family.
Louie Arnold Feikes, age 91, of Ackley passed away on March 1, 2025, peacefully at home with just family present, just as he had always wished.
Louie was born on December 22, 1933 in Franklin County to Luppe and Theda (Wubbena) Feikes. He was united in marriage to Carol Jean Klahsen on August 2, 1955 at the Washington Reformed Church parsonage. Louie was in the National Guard for three years and served in the Army from 1955 – 1957 in Japan, when he was honorably discharged. He was a member of St. John’s UCC Church of Ackley. He was also a member of the Elliott-Keninger Legion Post 252 of Ackley and participated in the honor guard when his health permitted. In 2014, Louie participated in the Honor Flight to Washington DC, with daughter, Deb, as his Guardian.
Louie attended country school Beaver Valley #8 in Franklin County until 8th grade, at which time his dad wanted him, like his brothers, to come help with the family farm. He farmed with his brother Henry (Hank) from 1957 until 1997 when Hank decided to retire. At that time he then continued to help others with farming or trucking (LeRoy Brandt, Larry Shugar, Ackley Canning Factory). He also enjoyed helping with construction remodels at St. John’s Church and his local legion post building. Louie was a member of the committee that fundraised and built the Ackley Veterans Memorial in 2009. Special friendships were enjoyed over the years at local coffee hours at Les Mooi’s shop, the Coop, until its close and Eichmeier Motor.
Louie and Carol enjoyed family summer vacations with the girls growing up and later when extended family grew it turned into an annual Feikes Family weekend. He also enjoyed following the grandkids’ activities even when he might not have understood all the rules. Picnics and card parties with friends, playing Pepper on Wednesday nights and fishing in the earlier years, most recent annual trips to Branson, Missouri and ventures to see Freedom Rocks in Iowa were enjoyed.
Louie is survived by this wife, Carol of 69 years; his daughters, Debra (Dave) Swanson, Pamela (LaVern) Schipper and Teresa (Joey) Krull all of Ackley, Iowa; his grandchildren, Daniel (Mary) Ibeling of Denver, Iowa, Janelle Ibeling of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Shayna Gulstrand (Hans) of New Hope, Minnesota, Cale (Lauren) Swanson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Bo (Emily) Schipper of Ackley, Iowa, Brett (Molly) Schipper of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Doug Krull (Alexandra) of Hendersonville, Tennessee, and Scott Krull (Erica Bennett) of Ames, Iowa; great-grandchildren: Madelyn Ibeling, Stella Thomas, Oden Gulstrand, Rowan Gulstrand, Poppy Swanson, Calli Schipper, Emerick Schipper, Kyler Krull, Mark Krull, Cashton Krull, Athena Kontos and Alexa Kontos; bonus great-grandchildren: Dimitri Catron, Bree Flater, Adrianna Bennett and Nathaniel Bennett (Erika’s children).;in laws: Jackie Klahsen, Irvin (Marlene) Klahsen, Esther Heffelmeier, Elaine Conkel (Steve Mohr) and Linda (Dennis) Hankes and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, George and Emma Klahsen; brothers, Meint Feikes, Henry Feikes and Fred Feikes; sisters, Martha Oelmann, Annie Oelmann, an infant sister at birth and son-in-law, Neil Ibeling; in-laws: Anna Feikes, Darlene Feikes, Ramona Feikes, George Oelmann, Else Oelmann, Bill Heffelmeier, Alvin and Audrey Heitland, Virgil Klahsen, James Klahsen, Vern Johns (Esther’s significant other).
