OBIT: Elaine Halsne

Elaine Halsne, 106, passed away peacefully in her Mason City home on Saturday, February 22, 2025. She met the love of her life, Milton Halsne, from Hanlontown. They were engaged before he volunteered for WWII. While he was away Elaine worked for the Tent and Awning in Mason City, sewing grommets on tents for the war.

Elaine Halsne, 106, passed away peacefully in her Mason City home on Saturday, February 22, 2025.

Elaine Opal Tweed was born on January 23, 1919, in Worth County the daughter of Adolph and Bertha (Hoveland) Tweed. She attended and graduated from Fertile High School, Fertile, Iowa. After graduation Elaine did waitress work at the Edmar Hotel in Mason City and gave piano lessons to the children in the area.

She then met the love of her life Milton Halsne, from Hanlontown. They were engaged before he volunteered for WWII. While he was away Elaine worked for the Tent and Awning in Mason City, sewing grommets on tents for the war. She also picked beans for the canning factory in Lake Mills.

After the war on April 5, 1945, Elaine and Milton were married, eventually having three children. Milton started farming and they ended up raising their family in the Rockwell area. Elaine was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and farm life. Elaine was a very caring, supporting mother. She and Milton enjoyed and rarely missed any activities of their children and grandchildren.

Elaine lived a long life and survived through a lot of events. At a young age she had polio, she lived through the Depression, she grew up in a family with no sons having to take charge of many chores, her fiancé was in WWII for four years before returning safely home, and she managed to heal from covid even at the age of 100.

Those left to cherish memories of Elaine are her children, Linda Wahl, Lana McElroy, and Steve Halsne; grandchildren, Stephanie (Chris) Waters, Jodi (Craig) Mayland, Lisa Halsne, Scott (Brandi) Halsne, and Leslie (Justin) Tarr; eleven great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Elaine is preceded in death by her husband; sister, Adoline Halsne; and sons-in-law, William McElroy and Steve Wahl.
