Robert L. Ries, 88, of Sumner, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2025, surrounded by his family at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, February 17, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner with Rev. Ralph Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, rural Sumner with military rites provided by Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM, Sunday, February 16th at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Monday. Memorials may be made to the family for later designation.
Robert Louis, son of John and Amelia (Bergfeld) Ries was born June 5, 1936, rural Randalia, Iowa. He received his blessed Sacraments in the Catholic Faith and attended school in Randalia. Bob served in the United States Army from 1958 until being honorably discharged in 1960. On November 26, 1960, he was united in marriage with Sharon Jarchow at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette. To this union two children were born, Randal and Emily. Bob was a life time farmer, and worked at John Deere starting in the 1950’s and retiring in the late 1980’s. He was a long time faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and strong supporter of the Fayette County Fair. In addition to his love for farming, Bob enjoyed attending stock car races and spending time with his grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his son, Randal of New York, NY; daughter, Emily (Tony) Snyder of Readlyn; grandson, Cole Snyder of Sumner; granddaughter, Mackenzie Snyder of Readlyn; brother, LaVerne Ries of Fayette; brother-in-law, Jimmy Jarchow of Waverly; and sister-in-law, Lila (Tom) Buchta of Libertyville, Illinois.
In addition to his parents and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Leonard and Lucile Jarchow, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon; brother, Jack Ries; sister, Del Rose “Dobie” Ries; brothers-in-law, Vern Toussaint, Kim Stevely, and Eugene Pattison; and sisters-in-law, Barb Toussaint, Joyce Ries, JoAnn Ries, Phyllis Pattison and Julie Stevely.
