Women’s College Basketball: Iowa defeats #4 USC, 76-69

IOWA CITY – Iowa (15-7, 5-6) got a huge win over #4/4 USC (19-2, 9-1), 76-69, Sunday afternoon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena as the program retired Caitlin Clark’s #22 jersey.

Iowa’s defense stifled USC in the first quarter holding the Trojans to 7 percent from the floor (1-14). Iowa led 18-4 at the end of the first quarter.

USC’s offense scoring four points in the first frame and shooting 7 percent from the field was the lowest of their season.

Iowa ended the third quarter making five out of its last six field goals and holding USC scoreless over the last 2:09 to regain the lead, 51-50.

In the fourth quarter, Iowa shot 64 percent from the floor. (9-14)

Iowa’s defense held USC’s JuJu Watkins to 8-of-22 from the field.

Iowa led the game for 29:24. The game was tied three times and featured six lead changes.

Iowa snapped USC’s 15-game winning streak.

Taylor McCabe became the 21st Hawkeye to net 100 career three pointers. McCabe hit three of Iowa’s five 3-pointers in the game.

Lucy Olsen led Iowa with 28 points which set a new career-high as a Hawkeye, shooting 10-of-18 from the field, four assists, and four rebounds. Olsen went 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. It was Olsen’s sixth 20-point performance as a Hawkeye – which is a team-best.

Addi O’Grady reached double figures for the 17th time this season. O’Grady played the entire fourth quarter with Hannah Stuelke in foul trouble.

Stuelke recorded 10 points and five rebounds.

Sydney Affolter recorded 11 points and nine rebounds. Affolter netted a career-high eight free throws (8-10) and five steals. Affolter is 28th on the Iowa all-time rebounding list. (542)

The Hawkeyes are 125-19 in Iowa City dating back to Nov. 11, 2016.

In Big Ten play, Iowa is 58-16 over the last four years.

The Hawkeyes have played in front of 32 consecutive sellouts, the longest streak nationally.

Iowa now leads the all-time series, 5-1.

The Hawkeyes have beaten USC five times in a row.
