Arlyn Dean Tenold was born in a car just outside of the old Lake Mills Hospital (currently the Victorian House) on March 25, 1939 to parents Alton and Carma (Reinsmoen) Tenold. He grew up on the farm outside of Joice, IA. He graduated from Joice High School in 1958. Arlyn excelled in sports while in school, playing baseball and was a part of the Joice basketball team that went to the state tournament his senior year! Sports were a passion that continued throughout his life, and enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports.
Arlyn married Judy Ann Horecka on January 3, 1959, and the couple was blessed with three children: Cindy, Paul, and Tim. Arlyn and Judy were blessed with 65 years together.
Arlyn was a lifelong farmer. He began helping on the family farm in his early years, transitioning to owning his own farms, and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren continue in the path of farming. Taking a break from farming in the morning and the afternoon, Arlyn also drove school bus for 59 years for the Joice and later the Lake Mills School Districts. Driving bus was one of Arlyn’s most favorite things to do – because each and every child on the bus meant so much to him. He was also blessed to gain many close friends through his fellow bus drivers. In his later years, Arlyn took pride in resurrecting, and caring for the old Bristol Cemetery – meticulously keeping it mowed, trimmed, and the gravestones clean. He also helped other cemeteries in the area if they asked. Other hobbies of his included: adult rec volleyball in his younger years, cribbage, and golf – where he was skilled (or lucky) enough to score two hole-in-ones! Arlyn was always kind, easy going, friendly, and always had time for a conversation.
He is preceded in death by both of his parents; son, Tim Tenold; great-granddaughter, Nola Pederson; brother, Gary (Dee) Tenold; and a brother in-law, Lyle Goll.
Arlyn’s memory will be carried on by his wife of 65 years, Judy Tenold of Lake Mills; children, Cindy (Gary) Pederson of Lake Mills and Paul (Terri) Tenold of Lake Mills; grandchildren, Ben (Brooke) Pederson of Lake Mills, Ashley (Joel) Dennhardt of Iowa City, Megan (Dan) Dietzel of Iowa City, Brittni (Jordan) Molstead of Charles City; Andrew (Katelyn) Tenold of Joice, Alex Tenold of Joice, and Jake Tenold of Dallas Center, IA; Great-grandchildren, Lila, Willa, Leo, and Luca Pederson, Sam and Jack Dennhardt, Temperance Dietzel, Jaeda, Kobie and Tate Molstead; and Coen and Cora Tenold; a sister, Gloria Goll of Klemme, IA; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends.
