AMES – No. 13 Iowa State dropped its first Big 12 dual of the season to No. 3 Oklahoma State, 27-12, Sunday evening in front of a rowdy Hilton Coliseum crowd. The Cyclones (8-4, 3-1 Big 12) took four of 10 matches from the Cowboys (11-0, 8-0 Big 12) but were outgunned by OSU’s upper weights after carrying a lead into the intermission.
It marked Iowa State’s first loss at home to a conference opponent since 2021. The dual was broadcast live on ESPN, joining last season’s Cy-Hawk dual as the only two college wrestling duals ever broadcast on the flagship station.
Jacob Frost highlighted the Cyclone effort with the highest ranked win of his career, defeating No. 4 Tagan Jamison, 4-1, in sudden victory. Paniro Johnson and Cody Chittum also notched wins over top-15 foes for ISU.
At 125 pounds, Ethan Perryman got the first two takedowns against No. 4 Troy Spratley but would go on to drop a 20-10 major decision.
No. 5 Evan Frost got the Cyclones on the board at 133 pounds with a solid victory over Reece Witcraft, who has been ranked in the top-15 nationally throughout much of the season. Frost gave up the first takedown but responded with one of his own, followed by a four-point tilt, in the second period to secure a 9-4 decision.
At 141 pounds, No. 13 Jacob Frost won a tactical matchup against No. 4 Tagen Jamison to tally the highest ranked win of his career. Frost was busy with his shot fakes throughout the match and finally got the deciding takedown in sudden victory for a 4-1 decision.
No. 11 Paniro Johnson notched his second consecutive top-15 win of the weekend as he defeated No. 14 Carter Young, 4-2. Johnson remains unbeaten with an 8-0 record since moving to 149 pounds.
No. 12 Cody Chittum sent the Cyclones into the intermission with a 12-4 lead in the dual score. He took out OSU’s No. 11 Caleb Fish, 4-2, thanks to a first-period takedown.
It was all Cowboys after the break, however, as Oklahoma State hit the heart of its lineup. OSU closed the dual with five-straight victories at 165, 174, 184, 197 and 285 pounds, including bonus-point wins at four of those weights.
True freshman Sawyer Bartelt made his Hilton Coliseum debut at 197 pounds.
