COUNCIL BLUFFS – A Nebraska man standing in the traveled portion of Interstate 80 in Iowa was struck and killed by a passing motorist from Illinois.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the incident took place at the 11-mile marker on Interstate 80 in Pottawattamie county, near Council Bluffs, Iowa. On December 28, 2024, at 12:10 AM, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in the eastbound lanes of I-80 at this location. The victim was identified as 51-year-old Michael Ponciano of Bellevue, Nevraska. The Patrol says Ponciano was standing in the travel portion of the left, eastbound lane when he was hit by a vehicle’s front passenger side corner. He was thrown to the center of the roadway and suffered fatal injuries.
The driver of the vehicle (a 2014 Toyota pickup), was identified as 48-year-old Chantell Williamson of Bourbonnais, Illinois. She was not injured.
