Darrel F. Brinkman, 95, of Greene, passed away Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 20, 2024, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. He will be laid to rest at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church on Friday. Woodley Funeral Home of Greene is caring for Darrel and his family.
Darrel Fred Brinkman was born September 11, 1929, son of Fred and Isabel (Hoffert) Brinkman. He was baptized at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene on October 20, 1929, and was also confirmed there on April 14, 1946. Darrel graduated from Greene High School in 1947. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1951-1954.
On December 25, 1952, Darrel was united in marriage to Peggy Waid in Providence, Rhode Island. To this union, five children were born. They returned to the Greene area in 1954 to farm. Darrel and Peggy enjoyed many winters in Texas with many dear friends. They were active in shuffleboard and won many tournaments; they have several trophies to show for it. They also loved camping in their motor home. Peggy passed away in 2002.
Darrel continued to winter in Texas and married fellow snowbird, Letha Hofler, on April 4, 2004. They moved to his home in Packard where they lived most of the last 19 years. Darrel loved his family and welcomed Letha’s family as his own. He loved spending time with and attending the activities of his kids, grandkids and great grandchildren.
Darrel is survived by his children: Debra Weber of Columbus, Indiana; Steven (Mary) Brinkman of Marble Rock; Michael (Julie) Brinkman of Greene; Denise Oden of Exline; and Beverly Brinkman of Sumner; grandchildren: Rebecca (Grant) Small, Bethany (Eric) Gabe, Rachel (Tyler) Majewski, Melissa (Curtis) Emily, Miranda (Zach) Campbell, Matthew (Therra) Weber, Tracy (Miranda) Miller and Tucker (Taylor) Brinkman; 15 great grandchildren; siblings: Kenneth (Beverly) Brinkman, Cathy Huber and Esther Bose; Letha’s children: Marilyn (George) Bell of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Nancy (Randy) Bonnett of Harvey and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives: Peggy Brinkman in 2002 and Letha Brinkman in 2023; and siblings: Ray Brinkman, Clarence Brinkman, Irene Sartori, Carol Ritchie and Ruth Duncan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Brinkman Family and mailed to 604 N Bluff Street, Greene, Iowa 50636. Memorial designation will be determined by the Brinkman Family at a later date.
