Donald W. Springer, 81 of Hampton and long-time business owner, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at Franklin General Hospital. Memorial services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, November 16, 2024 at the Hampton United Methodist Church. He will be laid to rest with a graveside inurnment at the Hampton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until service time on Saturday at the church. Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory of Hampton is caring for Don and his family.
Donald Wayne Springer was born on August 26, 1943, to Harold and Maxine (Heaton) Springer in Macomb, Illinois. Following high school Donald attended Universal Trade School.
On May 23, 1964, Donald was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Jo Weber at the Methodist Church in Arlington, Iowa.
Don started doing refrigeration work at Montgomery Ward in Marshalltown in 1963. He moved to Hampton in 1967, where he opened Don’s Appliance. In 1984, Don attended auctioneer school and started Springer Auction, which he operated until 2022.
Don loved playing golf and taking fishing trips to Northern Minnesota with family and friends.
Don was regularly involved with his community, serving as a volunteer fire fighter for twenty years and also served on the city council for one term. He was active with the Franklin County Food Pantry and a member of the United Methodist Church.
Donald Springer is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Springer of Hampton, Iowa; sons, Jeffrey (Diana) Springer of Hampton, Iowa, and Christopher (Jen) Springer of Union, Iowa; grandchildren: Taylor (Andrew) Throndson, Sarah (Blake) Springer, McCoy Springer, Megdalyn (Caleb) Springer, Paige (Breanne) Springer, Kasey Springer, and Hailey (Cole) Dietrich and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Mary (Jerome) Lenth and a brother, Richard (MaryLou) Springer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Maxine Springer, father and mother in-law, Willard and Regina Weber and his sister, Lola Ault.
