Hoins, Shumaker lead UNI Panther cross country at Cyclone Preview

AMES — The UNI cross country team kicked off the 2024 season on Friday morning competing at Iowa State's Cyclone Preview at the ISU Cross Country Course, setting multiple new career-best times to open the new year.

AMES — The UNI cross country team kicked off the 2024 season on Friday morning competing at Iowa State’s Cyclone Preview at the ISU Cross Country Course, setting multiple new career-best times to open the new year.

Senior Emma Hoins led the Panthers in the season opening women’s 5K race with a new career best time of 17:23 and a tenth place finish. Following her with a 13th place finish was Meghan Wheatley in 17:34 and Melody Ochana in 19th place with a time of 17:45. Kate Crawford crossed the finish line in 21st (17:51) followed closely by Amelia Hill in 22nd (17:57). Eden Mueller posted a time of 18:03 with a 26th place finish. Leah Klapatauskas recorded a time of 18:10 to come in 27th place and following her was Brooke O’Brien crossing in 29th place with a time of 18:40. Clare Wright (19:10) and Lauren Klein (19:46) rounded out the Panther field in 31st and 34th respectively.

Caleb Shumaker (8th, 18:31) and Carson Owens (10th, 18:43) both led the men’s side with career best times. Jack Bergman came in 14th place with a finishing time of 19:02, followed closely by Micah Rees in 15th (19:07). Levi Hill rounded out the top 20 with a time of 19:29. Following him with a 21st place finish was Brady Griebel (19:32). Crossing the finish line in 26th was Drew Dombrosky (20:14) and rounding out the Panther field was Josh Gormley (29th, 20:44).

UP NEXT
The Panthers will return to the course on Friday, Sept. 13 at the Redbird Invite in Normal, Illinois, hosted by Illinois State University. The competition will begin at 5 p.m CT.
