DUBUQUE – The City of Dubuque will receive nearly $1.9 million in U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) funds to install electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at five downtown locations in Dubuque. The charging stations will feature Level 2 and direct current (DC) fast charger stations and are expected to be operational in late 2025.
“Dubuque’s 50% by 2030 Climate Action Plan calls for supporting and encouraging alternative fuel vehicle adoption citywide and this grant supports building the infrastructure necessary for electric-fueled vehicles,” said City of Dubuque Sustainability Director Gina Bell. “This grant also supports other climate action goals including air quality improvement and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. We’re thrilled to put this historic climate funding to use in Dubuque, helping us meet our 50% by 2030 Plan goals while improving access and livability.”
The CFI grant program requires the charging stations to be in areas identified as “disadvantaged” by the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool (CEJST) and Argonne National Laboratory’s EV Charging Justice40 Map Tool. Census tracts 1 and 5 in Dubuque, which include the Washington Neighborhood, Historic Millwork District, and North End, meet that qualification. The proposed EV charging locations are:
– 2239 Prince Street (Bee Branch Greenway parking lot along Heritage Trail)
– 1800 Admiral Sheehy Drive (ImOn Ice Arena on Chaplain Schmitt Island near US 61/151)
– 460 E. 12th Street (public parking lot at Elm/12th St. near US 61/151)
– 210 Jones Street (Flat Iron Park near the intersection of US 20 and US 61/151)
– 90 Main Street (1st/Main St. intersection near US 61/151)
The locations within the census tracts were selected to serve residents, commuters, visitors, and commercial fleets. No property acquisition is necessary because all stations will be constructed on City-owned property and within the public right-of-way.
