Dr. John L. Fetter, 95, of Ackley, passed away Friday, July 12, 2024 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Funeral mass will be 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ackley. He will be laid to rest at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Woodley Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is caring for Doc Fetter and his family.
Dr. John Lewis Fetter was born on July 2, 1929 in Chelsea, Iowa. He was the beloved son of Lewis and Agnes (Dvorak) Fetter and grew up alongside his nine siblings.
John attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School followed by Chelsea Public High School, graduating in 1947. He continued his education at the University of Iowa, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1952 and a DDS from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1959. Between his undergraduate and dental studies, John served in the Army from 1952 to 1954 and again from 1959 to 1963, dedicating nine years to military service.
Following his military service, Dr. Fetter “Doc” established a privately owned dental practice in Ackley, Iowa, where he served the community from 1963 until his retirement in 2000. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ackley including assisting in the religious education program, the choir and ushering. Other interests included bowling, gardening, catching fireflies, and mentoring at the AGWSR elementary. He was also an avid walker frequently seen throughout the community.
John Fetter was preceded in death by his brothers, Louie, Tony and Phil; sisters: Lillian, Adeline, Martha, and Peggy. He is survived by his sister, Georgia (Fetter) Duffy and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
John’s life was marked by his dedication to his faith, his community and his country. His legacy of service and compassion leaves an indelible mark on all who knew him.
