NIACC baseball players receive all-region honors

MASON CITY - Three NIACC baseball players earned ICCAC Division II second-team all-region honors for the 2024 season.

MASON CITY – Three NIACC baseball players earned ICCAC Division II second-team all-region honors for the 2024 season.

NIACC sophomores Eli Anderson and John Lyman and freshman Alex Matchey were selected to the all-region second team. Five Trojans (Ollie Yuhas, Will Couchman, Darcy Barry, Cole Newell and Trett Joles) earned honorable mention all-region honors.

Anderson, an outfielder from Fairmont, Minn., hit .336 (71 hits) with 13 doubles, four triples and three home runs. Anderson, who was an honorable mention selection as a freshman, drove in 41 runs, scored 41 runs and stole 34 bases, which ranks second on NIACC’s single-season list.


Matchey, a freshman second baseman from Stillwater, Minn., hit .314 (53 hits) with eight doubles and one home run. He drove in 26 runs, walked 26 times and stole 11 bases.


Lyman, redshirt sophomore ight-hander from Minneapolis, was 3-3 with a 4.88 earned run average. Lyman, who was selected as a starting pitcher, struck out 62 and walked 26 in 48 innings of work.


Yuhas, a left-handed sophomore reliever from Victoria, Minn., appeared in a team-high 18 games and threw 29 1/3 innings. He struck out 26 and walked 14.

Couchman, a sophomore third baseman from Edina, Minn., hit .267 with 38 runs scored. Couchman, who was an honorable mention utility selection, had eight doubles, two triples and three home runs with 26 RBIs and 19 stolen bases.

Couchman was also an honorable mention selection as a freshman.

Barry, a sophomore shortstop from Adelaide, South Australia, hit .288 with 28 runs scored. He had 14 doubles, six home runs with 32 RBIs.

Newell, a right-handed redshirt freshman reliever from Maple Grove, Minn., was 3-3 in 13 appearances (18 1/3 innings pitched). He had 25 strikeouts and 11 walks.

Joles, a redshirt freshman catcher from Boyceville, Wis., hit .340 in 14 games. He scored 16 runs with three doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs.

Iowa Central freshman Cooper Nicholson was the league’s player of the year. Southeastern CC’s Justin Schulte was the league’s coach of the year.
