Iowa man busted with large amount of marijuana after firing stolen gun

BURLINGTON - An Iowa man allegedly had a few too many drinks then fired his stolen gun into the ground, leading cops to search his house and find plenty of marijuana.

BURLINGTON – An Iowa man allegedly had a few too many drinks then fired his stolen gun into the ground, leading cops to search his house and find plenty of marijuana.

On April 16, 2024 at approximately 8:43 AM, Burlington police officers responded to a report of shots being fired in the area of the 1300 block of North 6th Street. While officers were responding to the area, they were given a description of an adult male that was seen walking away from the area. When officers arrived in the area, they located evidence of a firearm being shot into the ground. Officers were able to view multiple videos from residents in the area. An adult male matching the suspect in the video and the initial description was located walking in the area. He was identified as Dayton Murray.

Murray exhibited signs of intoxication. It was learned the Murray lives a block away in the 600 block of Sycamore. A search warrant was conducted at Murray’s residence. During the execution of the search warrant, a firearm was located along with a large amount of marijuana. It was determined that the firearm was reported stolen out of West Liberty, Iowa.

As a result of the incident, 18-year-old Dayton Michael James Murray (pictured at top) was placed under arrest and charged with Carrying Weapons While Intoxicated, Reckless use of Firearm, Possession with Intent to Deliver – Marijuana, Failure to Affix Drug Tax Stamp, Theft 5th, and Public Intoxication.
