Tractor and anhydrous tank overturn on remote Northern Iowa road, causing $100,000 in damage

WESTGATE — Emergency crews responded to a farm accident south of Westgate after a tractor hauling agricultural equipment and an anhydrous ammonia tank left the roadway and overturned.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received the accident report at approximately 4:22 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2024, on Town Road.

An investigation determined that Donald Harold Meyer, 77, of Oelwein, was operating a Case IH 310 Magnum tractor northbound while towing a toolbar and an anhydrous tank.

The tractor and equipment left the roadway and entered the west ditch, causing the toolbar and anhydrous tank to overturn.

Authorities estimated the resulting damage at approximately $100,000.

The sheriff’s office did not provide information about injuries or indicate whether any anhydrous ammonia was released.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Westgate Fire and Ambulance, Farmers Win Co-op, the Linn County Hazardous Materials Response Team and Tieskoetter Collision.
