College Wrestling: Iowa State Cyclones advance 5 to NCAA Quarterfinals, tied with Iowa in 2nd place

Five Cyclones – Evan Frost, Anthony Echemendia, Casey Swiderski, David Carr and Yonger Bastida – went 2-0 on the day and are now in the quarterfinals.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Iowa State advanced all nine of its qualifiers to day two of the NCAA Championships Thursday inside the T-Mobile Center. Five Cyclones – Evan Frost, Anthony Echemendia, Casey Swiderski, David Carr and Yonger Bastida – went 2-0 on the day and are now in the quarterfinals.

ISU went 8-1 overall in Session II, 5-1 in the Second Round and 3-0 on the consolation side. Kysen Terukina, Cody Chittum and MJ Gaitan all kept their seasons alive on the back side.

The Cyclones are tied for second place in the team standings, along with Iowa, with 24.5 team points. Penn State leads the tournament with 34.5. Once again, bonus points were a theme as ISU put 13 extra tallies on the board (3 WBF, 4 TF, 1 MD).

How it Happened
Terukina was victorious, 4-2, over Army’s Ethan Berginc in a 125-pound consolation match. The Cyclone was in deep on a shot multiple times during the bout’s opening period but finally finished what proved to be the deciding takedown in the second period.

A takedown with eight seconds left in the final period pushed Frost through to the quarterfinals with a 4-1 decision in a tight match against Arizona State’s Julian Chlebove.

At 141 pounds, Echemendia used two first-period takedowns to best Missouri’s Josh Edmond, 8-2. The Cyclone was also tough on top, finishing with nearly two minutes of riding time.

No. 8 Casey Swiderski and Cornell’s No. 9 Ethan Fernandez exchanged takedowns in the first period before eventually going to tiebreakers tied, 5-5. Swiderski secured a ride out in the first 30-second period and, after picking neutral, registered an insurance takedown at the buzzer in the second 30-second tiebreaker period for an 8-5 victory.

In a 157-pound consolation match, Chittum bounced back in a big way with a 20-4 tech fall against Rider’s Colton Washleski in 5:00.

Carr became Iowa State’s fourth quarterfinalist with a 10-1 decision over Stanford’s Hunter Garvin. Carr recorded three takedowns in the win, two in the first period and a third with 17 second remaining in the match.

Gaitan extended his season with a headlock for a fall in 4:11 against Michael Wilson of Rider.

Bastida put an exclamation point on the session with a 20-5 tech fall against Cornell’s No. 15 Lewis Fernandes. The Cyclone widened the gap from a 6-3 result in Bastida’s favor when the pair met at the Collegiate Duals in December. Bastida made noticeable improvement on bottom, getting an escape in the third period after being unable to get out in their first meeting.
