MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE - UNI softball picked up its first road win of the 2024 season in grand fashion on Wednesday evening, spoiling Memphis' home opener with a 7-0 victory over the Tigers. Samantha Heyer starred in the victory with a 14-strikeout no-hitter.

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE – UNI softball picked up its first road win of the 2024 season in grand fashion on Wednesday evening, spoiling Memphis’ home opener with a 7-0 victory over the Tigers. Samantha Heyer starred in the victory with a 14-strikeout no-hitter, and an early offensive barrage led by Addison McElrath provided more-than enough offense for the Panthers to secure the victory.

The Panthers showed little signs of rust following a week-and-a-half away from action, jumping on the Tigers in the first inning. UNI’s first three batters reached base which set the table for McElrath. She ripped a triple down the right field line that cleared the bases and put the Panthers up 3-0 before the Tigers could record a single out. The triple marked the first of McElrath’s collegiate career.

Memphis starting pitcher Taniyah Brown sat down UNI’s next two batters before Faith Standerski reached on an error that scored McElrath from third base. UNI ended the top of the first with a four-run advantage.

From there, Heyer (pictured at top via UNI Athletics) went to work. The reigning Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year sat down the first six batters of the game before the Panthers built on their advantage in the third inning. McElrath recorded her career-high fourth RBI of the game with a double that scored Madison Parks.

Taylor Hogan drove home the Panthers’ sixth run of the contest with an infield single, and Standerski drove home what would ultimately be the final run of the contest with an RBI groundout.

The teams entered the bottom of the third inning with UNI holding a 7-0 lead. In the home half of the inning, the Tigers put together their most threatening scoring chance of the evening. Heyer hit the first batter of the inning, then allowed a walk. With runners at first and second and no outs, Heyer regained control and struck out the next three Memphis hitters to end the frame.

UNI did not record a hit after the top of the third inning, but Heyer’s dominance in the circle ensured the Tigers would stay off the scoreboard. Heyer retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth inning, and worked around a hit batter in the sixth inning to keep Memphis both scoreless and hitless.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Heyer punctuated her stellar performance by striking out the side to secure a no-hitter. Heyer totaled 14 strikeouts in her first complete game no-hitter since May 5, 2023, which doubled as a perfect game in an 8-0 win against Evansville.

Wednesday’s win improved the Panthers to 4-2 on the season.

Wednesday’s contest marked just the third all-time meeting between UNI and Memphis and the first since 2016. The Panthers are 3-0 against the Tigers, and two of those wins have come at Memphis.
McElrath recorded a career-high four RBIs against the Tigers. McElrath had two three-RBI games in 2023, the most recent of which came on April 7 against Indiana State.
McElrath also recorded the first triple of her collegiate career with her bases-clearing knock in the top of the first inning.
Heyer recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts against Memphis, which is tied for the third-most strikeouts she has recorded in a single game in her collegiate career. Heyer’s career high of 17 strikeouts came on April 28, 2023 against Valparaiso.
Standerski recorded her first RBI of the 2024 season in the third inning.
Makenna Kuper recorded her first plate appearance of the 2024 season in the fifth inning, lining out to center.
The Panthers recorded their third shutout victory of the 2024 season on Wednesday.
Through six games, UNI pitching is yet to allow an earned run. The Panthers’ staff has a collective ERA of 0.00 entering this weekend’s Auburn Plainsman Invite.

The Panthers are back in action this weekend at Auburn’s Plainsman Invite. UNI will play six total games in the event, two each against No. 24 Auburn, Longwood and Southeast Missouri State.

Due to other home events on Auburn’s campus, only Saturday’s games featuring the host Tigers will be televised. That includes UNI’s game against Auburn on Saturday at 4 p.m., which will be carried by SEC Network+. Live stats will be available for all of the Panthers’ games at the event.
