Nancy Beverly Moen, 90, of Mason City, died Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Country Meadow Place, following a nine-year struggle with dementia.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Ave, Mason City. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Memorials maybe directed to St. Croix Hospice.
Nancy was born 5 November 1933, the daughter of Frank and Emilia (Salmi) Salmi in Superior, Wisconsin. She married Charles B. Moen on 23 July 1955 in Superior.
A graduate of Superior East High School, class of 1951, Nancy attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison on a full academic scholarship, receiving her BBA in 1955. At 50 years of age, Nancy went back to college at the University of Northern Iowa, earning her MA in 1983.
After marriage, Nancy and Charles relocated to Seattle, Washington, where Nancy was employed as a high school business education teacher. A year later the couple moved back to Minneapolis where Nancy taught evening business courses for both the Bloomington and Richfield school districts.
The family moved to Mason City in 1967 and Nancy was employed at Hamilton Business College until August 1971 when she was hired as the office education coordinator at Mason City High School. She had a large impact on many students, placing them into work experience positions that ultimately turned into lifetime careers. During her 22-year teaching career at MCHS, Nancy was a proud member of the Mason City Education Association, serving on the negotiations team for many years.
After retirement, Nancy continued to teach evening classes at North Iowa Community College and was also employed as an office assistant for American Express Financial Advisors for eight years.
Nancy was an excellent cook and hostess. She loved holiday baking which always included several loaves of the family favorite Finnish pulla. She also enjoyed traveling which included a visit to her father’s ancestral home in Finland and a cruise on the QE2.
Nancy was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City. She was also a 50-year member of PEO.
Nancy is survived by her daughter, Robyn (Moen) Kramer of Clear Lake; son Frank G. Moen of Garner; granddaughter Jade (Moen) Allen, of Minneapolis, and grandson Kenneth “KC” Kramer, Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 2001; her son-in-law, Kelvin Kramer; her parents, her brothers, Floyd Salmi and Clifford Heiskanen, and her sister Mildred (Salmi) Dunson.
The family would like to thank the staff of Country Meadow Place for the kindness and care they have shown to Nancy for the past 9 years.
