Bob was born in Odebolt, Iowa in 1949 to Rachel and Pat Thies. Bob grew up on the family farm where he was the 3rd of The Lucky Seven children of Pat and Mary Thies.

He joined the military in 1967, served in the Army and completed a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. After returning, he attended Iowa State University earning a degree in Agribusiness. Following his time at ISU, he moved to Algona where he spent most of his career as a farm manager for Farmers National Company, retiring in 2012. In retirement Bob enjoyed traveling with his wife Paula and son Patrick, being a grandfather, cheering on his beloved Cyclones, and could often be found having a steak sandwich and a scotch and soda at Emerald’s.

Bob married twice, first to Diane. They had two children together, Matt and Ali. In 1986, Bob married Paula Eastman of Callender; together they raised Paula’s children Greg and Sherry, adding Patrick to the family in 1999.

Bob is survived by his wife Paula, his daughter Ali, her husband Greg, and their children Mitchel, Dillon, and Levi of Omaha, Nebraska; his son Patrick of Des Moines, Iowa; step-son Greg and his wife Irene of Wentzville, Missouri; step-daughter Sherry, her husband Phil, and their children Aidan and Alex of Overland Park, Kansas. He is also survived by his brothers Don (Peg), Wayne (Evelyn) and Gerry (Barb). He is preceded in death by his parents Rachel, Pat, and Mary Thies; his son Matt; his brother Mike; his sister Lois and his brother Dick.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you direct memorials to the Farmers National Company Foundation. Your memorial will be applied to a scholarship fund in Bob’s name for a student attending Iowa State University.
