RURAL CARROLL COUNTY – A man and a child were killed in an auto crash when a driver attempted to pass another vehicle and lost control, colliding with a power pole.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident took place on Monday morning, January 22, 2024. At about 7:57 AM, on Highway 71 south of 150TH Street in Carroll county, 41-year-old Joshua Shelton was traveling southbound on Highway 71 in a 2005 Ford F-150 with a child passenger. He passed a southbound vehicle and lost control as he retuned to the southbound lane. The pickup truck then entered the west ditch and struck a Mid-American Energy electric pole.

As a result of the accident, both Shelton and his passenger suffered fatal injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts, the Patrol says. The name of the child has not yet been released.
