School shooting reported in Iowa Thursday morning

PERRY – It appears that tragedy struck an Iowa school this morning and authorities are actively dealing with a school shooting incident in Perry, Iowa.

PERRY – It appears that tragedy struck an Iowa school this morning and authorities are actively dealing with a school shooting incident in Perry, Iowa.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, an initial statement will be made at 10 AM this morning to give preliminary information on the school shooting at Perry High School and Middle School that occurred the morning of January 4, 2024.  The Division of Criminal Investigation will conduct the press conference alongside the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and the Perry Police Department.

A press conference will be held later this afternoon when more information is available as this situation is still developing. A large police presence was described in reports as well as a possible medical helicopter. Media is reporting that more than one person was shot at Perry High School and police have zeroed in on a suspect.

Perry is about 40 miles northwest of Des Moines.

Authorities later confirmed the shooter was a 17-year-old male who was deceased via self-deletion.  Up to 5 other persons were hurt in the shooting, and there was no immediate word on any other fatalities.

High profile Iowa politicians responded to the gun violence, and as they are almost all Republicans, only offered thoughts and prayers. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds said, “Our hearts are broken by this senseless tragedy. Our prayers are with the students, teachers & families of the Perry Community.” She later ordered flags to be lowered to show support for the Perry community.
