OBIT: Jake Harms Mehmen

Jake Mehmen, 102, of Greene, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 11, 2023, at MercyOne North Iowa in Mason City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene.

Jake Mehmen, 102, of Greene, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 11, 2023, at MercyOne North Iowa in Mason City. Woodley Funeral Home of Greene is caring for Jake and his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Frantz Augustin officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service with burial at St. Mary Cemetery in Greene.

Jake was born on December 10, 1921, in Clarksville, IA, the son of Klaus and Grace (Arenholz) Mehmen. He attended country school north of Shell Rock. Jake served in the United States Army during WWII until he was honorably discharged. On April 22, 1946, he was united in marriage to Eula Mae (Kramer) at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene. To their union, two daughters, Jolene and Diane were born. The couple resided on Eula’s family farm for their entire lifetime. Jake loved farming and was an extremely hard-worker. Jake and Eula butchered their own meat, did their own canning and vegetable/flower gardening. Jake was gardening up into his 90’s; he enjoyed having work to do and staying busy. Jake was a life-long member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Diane (Michael) Grant of Mason City; son-in-law, Dennis Edwards of Canton, Mo; granddaughters: Julie (Jamie) Lubbert of Canton, Mo., Jenna (Dave Beisch) Akers of Algona and Jessica (Andy) Rye of Mason City; nine great-grandchildren: Noah (Sierra Nelson) Hagemeister, Reed Schneider, Luke Schneider, Collin (Alex) Lubbert, Taylor Lubbert, Jason Rye, Aspen Rye, Mason Akers and Kayla Akers; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Mehmen in 2012; daughter, Jolene Edwards; granddaughter, Kristin Edwards-Malek; brothers: Ralph Mehmen, Koert Miller, Hank Mehmen and Raymond Mehmen; sister, Carrie Gambaiani and his parents, Klaus and Grace Mehmen.
