Women’s College Basketball: Brown leads Iowa State to victory over UNCW, 85-58

AMES – Iowa State (4-3, 0-0 Big 12) took the win over UNCW (2-5, 0-0 CAA) Sunday afternoon by a final of 85-58. Addy Brown marked the game with her first 20-plus point performance, leading a trio of Cyclone double-figure scorers.

Iowa State began to stretch a lead in the second quarter and never looked back, going out to a lead of as much as 30. ISU shot over 50 percent from the field while holding UNCW to 27.8 percent through the game.

Freshman Brown put up career highs in both points (24) and assists (10). It was the Derby, Kansas native’s second double-double and first of the points and assists variation. Audi Crooks also was in double figures, totaling 16. Crooks has scored 10 or more points in six of the Cyclone’s first seven games. Fellow freshman Jalynn Bristow was the third with 10-plus points, scoring a career-high 13 for her first double-figure point outing.

After UNCW took its first advantage of 5-4 on a triple, the Cyclones responded with a 3-pointer of their own by Hannah Belanger to retake the lead with 5:44 to go. The Seahawks would bring the game within two points (12-10) after a shot from deep, but ISU hit four of its last five shots to end the quarter ahead 23-11. Brown made two triples with just over two minutes remaining to enter double figures before the end of the first.

The Cyclones set out on stretching a double-digit advantage in the second frame, building a lead of as much as 19 while shooting over 50 percent from the field and holding UNCW to an efficiency of 20 percent through the first half. After two quarters, the score stood at 41-24 with Brown leading the way with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

Belanger sunk the shot from beyond the arc as Kelsey Joens followed to fight for the defensive rebound to again take the ball back. Brown capitalized on it, making her third 3-pointer on just four attempts as ISU went ahead by 22 (48-26) as UNCW called a timeout. ISU remained ahead by over 20 (58-36) as Brown hit a 3 to officially record the first 20-plus point performance of her young career. With two seconds left in the third, Nyamer Diew blocked UNCW’s shot as ISU held the lead of 62-41.

The Cyclones remained in control in the final quarter, putting up a 30-point lead at 83-53 with 1:27 on the clock. Iowa State went on to seal the victory by a final score of 85-58.

Top Performance
Addy Brown put up her first 20-plus point and fifth 10-plus performance with 24 on 9-of-14 shooting. Brown made four 3-pointers on five attempts and added 10 assists, five rebounds, a block and a steal to her final stat line.
