CHARLES CITY – Today, authorities in Charles City advised residents to ventilate their homes using their choice of several methods after strange odors were reported.

According to the Charles City fire department, at about 1:45 PM this afternoon, they were dispatched to a gas like odor at a residence on the 400 block of 9th ave. On arrival, a team made entry to investigate the origins of the odor.

“We were able to confirm that there was not a gas leak at the residence,” The CCFD said is a statement. “Charles City Police Department made contact with crews at the railroad crossing on E street and was able to determine that construction crews were in the process of sealing the new sewer connects at the site and the odor was from the materials being used for this connections. The crews have recommended that residents open their windows and shutdown their furnace to help ventilate their homes. They also recommend to run some to water down your floor drains help flush the odor and create a barrier in the drain. With that said please do not hesitate to contact us if you are unsure of the odor in your homes.”

The CCFD advised that gas leaks result in higher levels of CO or carbon monoxide in your home and can be deadly. Also ensure you have Carbon monoxide detectors in your home and ensure they are functioning correctly.
