Attacking pit bull unleashed by suspect shot dead by police in Spencer

SPENCER - A suspect police were attempting to interact with in Spencer unleashed a pit bull upon the officers and the dog was sent prancing over the rainbow bridge with the help of a bullet.

SPENCER – A suspect police were attempting to interact with in Spencer unleashed a pit bull upon the officers and the dog was sent prancing over the rainbow bridge with the help of a bullet.

Police in Spencer reported that on October 24th, 2023 at 5:56 PM, the Spencer Police Department responded to the 900 blk of E. 7th St for a welfare check on a person believed to be in a mental health crisis. Upon arrival, Officers encountered a resident that became verbally aggressive with them and released two dogs that charged law enforcement on scene. One of the dogs (pit bull) left the property and continued to charge an officer until it was killed by law enforcement. The resident then retreated back inside the home and refused to come out for approximately 2 hours. The resident was then taken into custody without incident and transported to Spencer Hospital for medical treatment.

The Spencer Police Department was assisted by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Okoboji Police Department, Spencer Municipal Hospital, Spencer Fire, and Season Center Mobile Crisis.
