NEW HAMPTON – A Charles City man is in serious trouble after he allegedly caused damage in a school parking lot in New Hampton.

On August 20, 2023, the New Hampton Police Department was contacted for damages made to the high school parking lot. Police say $5,300 in damage was caused to the new high school parking lot. Video footage of the incident was provided as evidence, according to police. Upon further investigation, it was learned that 19-year-old Damien Thornton of Charles City was driving the vehicle that caused the damage. Thornton was charged with felony D second-degree criminal mischief and three counts of reckless driving.

On September 3, Damien Thornton was arrested on Highway 52 and 175th Street in Calmar on an arrest warrant by the Winneshiek county sheriff’s office.

New Hampton Community Schools said later, “We would like to thank the New Hampton Police Department for their partnership in helping keep our community safe. We take pride in our schools along with the community and appreciate the support.”

Thornton is now scheduled to be arraigned on October 31.
