KOSSUTH COUNTY – An alert Northern Iowa officer noticed a possible damsel in distress and when they attempted to investigate, an armed felon decided to get wild.
On September 26, 2023 at about 12:45 PM, Kossuth County Deputies were in the Swea City area investigating a complaint at the corner of Ash and 3rd Avenue. While completing that call for service, deputies observed a separate incident with a young male and female walking near the corner of 3rd Avenue and 1st Street that were involved in some type of argument.
When deputies approached the young male, he fled on foot and attempted to hide a backpack that he was carrying on his person. Deputies detained the subject until they could determine why he fled on foot. The young male then took of running and after a brief foot pursuit, he fell on his own to the ground. Deputies determined there was a handgun in the backpack. While deputies attempted to arrest and transport the subject, he assaulted two officers. He also attempted to damage a patrol car by kicking at the doors and windows. The young male was transported to the Kossuth County Jail and was identified as Timothy Michael Nelson, age 19 of Swea City. He was charged with:
• Felon in possession of a firearm
• Two counts of Assault on a Peace Officer
• Trespass
• Interference with Official Acts
Nelson is in the Kossuth County Jail.
