THORNTON – A Thornton man tried leaving town, but a deer forced him to put his vehicle in a creek, leading to an ambulance ride.

On August 25, 2023, at 7:19 AM, the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of a single vehicle accident with injuries. On scene, Deputies discovered the accident had happened in the afternoon hours on August 24, 2023.  The driver, Nathan Benjegerdes, age 21 of Thornton, was northbound on 5th Street North leaving Thornton when his vehicle left the roadway while attempting to avoid a deer. Benjegerdes’ vehicle entered a wooded area before coming to rest in a creek.

Benjegerdes was transported to Mercy One North Iowa by the Mason City Fire Department with apparent non-life threatening injuries.

No foul play is suspected.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Mason City Fire Department, Thornton Fire Department and Thornton EMT’s.
