A funeral Mass for Dennis Shollenbarger will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with Reverend Tom Heathershaw officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be given to Immaculate Conception Catholic School.

Dennis “Denny” Charles Shollenbarger, the son of Charles Elvin and Opal Mae (Simmons) Shollenbarger, was born on May 29, 1948 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He attended country school, the Colwell Public Schools, graduated from Charles City High School in 1966 and attended NIACC for two years receiving a degree in business.

Denny was united in marriage to Victoria “Vickie” Banks on September 30, 1968 in Mannheim, Germany while he was serving in the United States Army (being honorably discharged in 1970). After his discharge, the couple moved to Floyd for two years before moving to Charles City where they continued raising their family.

Denny was a full-time firefighter with the Charles City Fire Department for five years (and continued as a volunteer firefighter for over 20 years) before beginning his career in fertilizer with Amoco Fertilizer. He purchased the business after several years and renamed it Denny’s Ag Supply which he operated for 40 years (with Vickie’s help), retiring in 2014.

Denny was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks, Order of the Moose, American Legion and he served on the Immaculate Conception Catholic School Board and the St. Charles Township Board of Trustees. He enjoyed tractors, farming, going on car cruises in the summer, helping plan his class reunion every five years (which he never missed) and cars, cars, cars! Denny loved being social and he joined many coffee groups (Floyd, Dave’s Restaurant, McDonald’s, Hy-Vee and his own living room) and spent time with his Comet Bowl lunch group as well. He never met a stranger and considered all of the farmers, coffee group members and lunch group members wonderful friends.

Living family members include his wife of 55 years, Vickie of Charles City; daughter, Tina (Bret) Nelson of Vinton; son, Tony (Melissa) Shollenbarger of Charles City; grandchildren: Tanner (Alison) Nelson, Justin (Meaghan) Nelson, Joshua (Kelsey) Shollenbarger and Dalton (Madison) Nelson; great-grandchildren: Oliver, Clara, Brooks, Everly, Cayson, Cohen and one on the way; siblings: Donald (Nancy) Shollenbarger, Joyce Barry and David Shollenbarger; along with numerous other family members and friends.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Tami.
