TERRE HAUTE, Indiana – The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated 7-4, by the No. 1 seeded Indiana State Sycamores at Bob Warn Field.

The Hawkeyes led 4-2 through 7 innings before a five run eighth inning propelled Indiana State to victory.

Brody Brecht got the start for Iowa and threw seven innings allowing two hits and two runs while striking out eight.

Jared Simpson entered in relief and was tagged with the loss throwing 1/3 inning and allowing four earned runs. Luke Llewellyn threw the final 2/3 inning striking out two and allowing one earned run.

“Brody went out and did everything he could do to give us a chance,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Offensively, we battled all game and finally broke through with a couple runs to give us a two-run lead in the eighth. Unfortunately, it didn’t go well when we went to the bullpen with a couple free bases and some bad luck on a few plays. Luke came in in a tough situation where he had to pound the strike zone and they made us pay with two big hits to break the game open”

Raider Tello was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sam Hojnar, Michael Seegers, and Kyle Huckstorf also each tallied an RBI for Iowa.

Iowa outhit the Sycamores, 7-6, and each team left five runners stranded.

“We rallied a little in the ninth, but their left fielder made an awesome play,” said Heller. “We gave them a few things in the eighth and they took advantage of the opportunities, and you have to tip the hat to them on that.”
