Kay A. Backhaus, 83, of Mason City, died Friday, June 2, 2023, at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Kay A. Backhaus, 83, of Mason City, died Friday, June 2, 2023, at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N Pennsylvania Ave with Pastor Dan Dahl officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, June 5, 2023, at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the family of Kay Backhaus.

Kay Ann Backhaus was born on February 10, 1940, to parents E.A. Pete and Ann (Wearda) Oehlert. Kay attended Clear Lake High School. During high school Kay met David McCoid and in 1957, the couple was united in marriage in Charles City. Together the couple had two children. Kay and her family would end up moving for David’s job but always found their way back to Mason City. In 2001, David passed away.

In 2005, Kay was united in marriage to Norman Backhaus and with this union brought two families together. After her marriage she moved to the farm. It was there that her love for animals grew even more. She had a special fondness for cats. She loved mowing the lawn and gardening brought her great joy. Kay enjoyed knitting, being involved with 4-H and being a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her family was her pride and joy and loved spending time with them.

Kay is survived by her children, Kim (Mark) Sime, Mike (Nancy) McCoid; step-children, Rick (Jennifer) Backhaus, Darci Kellar, Brett (Jackie) Backhaus, Nicole (Jay) McDonough; sister-in-law, Kathleen Springthorpe, grandchildren, Matt, Ben (Carmody), Jon (Lauren) Sime, Danielle (Jeremy) Corcoran, Jessica (Dustin) and Nicole (Alex) McCoid; great grandchildren, Wyatt, Lily, Alice, Arthur, Mabel, Logan, Liam and Livia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands David and Norman; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
