Suspect in custody after shooting in downtown Iowa City

IOWA CITY – After a man was shot in downtown Iowa over the weekend, a suspect is now in custody as police investigate this incident of gun violence.

IOWA CITY – After a man was shot in downtown Iowa over the weekend, a suspect is now in custody as police investigate this incident of gun violence.

At 11:45 PM on Saturday, May 13, 2023, Iowa City Police responded to the Clock Tower Parking Ramp at the intersection of Iowa Avenue and Gilbert Street after nearby officers heard multiple shots fired. While responding, police received multiple calls indicating one person had been shot.

Responding officers located an adult man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the sidewalk adjacent to the parking ramp on the Iowa Avenue side. Officers and first responders from the Iowa City Fire Department and Johnson County Ambulance Service provided aid to the man, who was transported to an area hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

The suspect was last seen fleeing the area on foot with several other people involved in an altercation preceding the shooting

As a result of the ongoing investigation into shooting, Iowa City Police have arrested Alexander O. Voudhivong, 22, of Iowa City. Voudhivong faces the following charges:

Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury
Reckless Use of a Firearm
Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon
Going Armed with Intent
Fourth Degree Criminal Mischief
Assault While Participating in a Felony

The case remains under investigation and additional arrests are anticipated, police say.
