CEDAR RAPIDS – Three people are dead and others hurt in auto accidents this weekend in Iowa’s second-largest city.

Cedar Rapids Police are investigating a Sunday morning traffic accident that left two deceased and three others injured. Joint Communication Agency Dispatchers received multiple calls at approximately 2:56a.m. about a vehicle accident in the 2100 block of Williams Blvd SW. Officers arrived to find two vehicles with significant damage and a total of five involved occupants.

Preliminary investigations indicate a Dodge Caliber was traveling east on Williams and began to spin out-of-control. That vehicle struck a westbound Toyota Rav 4. The 23-year-old driver of the Dodge Caliber was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 29-year-old passenger in the Dodge Caliber also passed away following treatment at a local hospital. Three adult passengers in the Toyota Rav 4 all sustained serious, but not-life-threatening injuries and were also transported to a local hospital for medical care.

In another crash, Cedar Rapids Police are investigating a fatal, Friday-night motor vehicle rollover on I-380 near the 7th St NE bridge. At approximately 10:51p.m., officers were called to I-380 Northbound near the 7th St NE bridge and found a single vehicle off the roadway, overturned, and the driver deceased.

Witnesses say the vehicle driven by 19-year-old Jessica Youngton, of Cedar Rapids, moved across several lanes of traffic on the interstate, struck a guardrail, rolled, and stopped under the 7th St NE bridge. No other vehicles or injuries were reported in the incident. Cedar Rapids Police closed I-380 North for several hours to allow responders access to the scene and conduct their investigation.
