OBIT: Doris A. Barber

Doris died Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at Kossuth Regional Health Center. She was 92.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at the United Methodist Church in Lu Verne with Reverend Olympia Muller officiating. Funeral service will be livestreamed on Oakcrest Funeral Services’ Facebook Page. Burial will be held in Lu Verne Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2023 at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Lu Verne.

Doris Alberta Barber was born February 17, 1931, on the farm in Lu Verne. She was the daughter of Albert and Dora (Bronleewe) Schipull. She grew up in the Lu Verne area, attended district 8 country school until the eighth grade and then attended Lu Verne High School where she graduated in 1948. Following High School, Doris attended the University of Northern Iowa for one year. Doris taught elementary school for one year following college.

On July 28, 1950, Doris married Robert Barber at the United Methodist Church in Lu Verne. Together they raised their six children and farmed east of Lu Verne. Besides raising her children and helping on the farm, Doris would also substitute teach when she was needed.

Doris enjoyed cooking, reading, bowling, and attending her children and grandchildren’s events. She enjoyed watching all kinds of sports but was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Doris was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Lu Verne where she served many roles in several offices; including teaching Sunday School and being one of the first women to serve on the board of trustees. Doris also served on City Council, the library board, was a 51+ year member of the Eastern Star and helped with music boosters.

Doris died Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at Kossuth Regional Health Center. She was 92.

She is survived by her children, Dennis (Carol) Barber of Madison, WI, Mark (Kathy) Barber of Bettendorf, Curtis (Jan) Barber of Des Moines, Kent (Stacy) Barber of Algona, Kevin (Kandi) Barber of Coralville, and Peggy (Mark) Lenz of Whittemore; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Margaret (Barber) Jahr of Mankato, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, Robert; brothers, Everett and Gerald Schipull; and sister, Lois Stewart.
