Iowa student arrested for felonies after bringing loaded handgun to school

AMES – An Iowa student brought a loaded handgun to school, and was arrested on two felony charges.

On April 14, 2023, at 2:47 PM, the Ames Police Department responded to a report of a loaded gun at Ames High School, 1801 Ridgewood Avenue. School administration located the loaded handgun in the backpack of a student. The student has been identified as Tae-Shyne Michael Johnson, age 18, of Ames.

He has been arrested and charged with the following:

• Carrying weapons on school grounds, a class D felony, Iowa Code section 724.4B
• Trafficking in stolen weapons, a class D felony, Iowa Code section 724.16A(1)(A)

The Ames Police Department continues to investigate this incident.
