TULSA, Okla. – Iowa State advanced five wrestlers to Friday night at the NCAA Championships. David Carr won his quarterfinal match Thursday afternoon inside the BOK Center while four other Cyclones advanced to the blood round.

Carr advances into the semifinals where he will take on Princeton’s Quincy Monday with a chance to wrestle for a national title on the line.

Zach Redding, Casey Swiderski, Marcus Coleman and Sam Schuyler will all wrestle in the blood round for All-America honors tonight.

Iowa State sits in 10th place in the team race with 25.5 points. The Cyclones went a combined 8-4 in Session III.

Quarterfinals
Carr grinded out a tough 2-1 win over 2021 165-pound national champion Shane Griffith in the quarterfinals. Neither wrestler managed a takedown in the match, but Carr put on a tough ride for most of the third period. Griffith eventually escaped and nearly had the winning takedown at the buzzer, but Carr survived and advanced to the semifinals.

Marcus Coleman dropped a tough match, 3-1, in sudden victory to Oregon State’s Trey Munoz in his quarterfinal match.

Consolation Rounds Two & Three
Redding started his day with an 11-3 major decision against Columbia’s Angelo Rini before advancing into the blood round with a 5-3 win in sudden victory against Cody Phippen of Air Force. Redding used a smooth duck-under to get the takedown in the first five seconds of SV-1.

Swiderski also went 2-0 in the session. He started his day with a thriller against No. 7 Vince Cornella from Cornell in the consolation second round. Trailing 7-1 late in the match, Swiderski got a takedown and, while releasing Cornella, used a cement mixer to put Cornella on his back and pick up the fall with 12 seconds remaining.

In his second match of the session, Swiderski was much the aggressor and registered four takedowns in a 10-5 decision over Northwestern’s Frankie Tal Shahar.

Schuyler won a pair of one-takedown matches to advance into the blood round. He took out Indiana’s Jacob Bullock, 3-2, before beating Oklahoma’s Josh Heindselman. 4-2.

Three Cyclones saw their tournaments come to an end in Session III: Jason Kraisser, Yonger Bastida and Paniro Johnson.

In Kraisser’s first match of the day against No. 10 Kaden Gfeller, the Cyclone struck first with a takedown. He then stacked Gfeller up with a chicken wing for the first-period fall. Kriasser’s tournament came to an end in the consolation third round with a 10-1 defeat to Northern Colorado’s Vinny Zerban.

Bastida went 1-1 on the day, defeating Andrew Davison of Northwestern before dropping a close one, 2-1, on riding time to Lehigh’s No. 5 Michael Beard.

Johnson dropped his first match of the day, 3-2, to Penn’s Doug Zapf.
