AMES – Six Iowa State wrestlers are seeded third or better in the pre-seeds at the 2023 Big 12 Championship, the league office announced Monday.
David Carr is the No. 1 seed at 165 pounds and has his sights set on becoming the fourth Cyclone in school history to win four conference titles. The Ohio native is 10-0 in his career at the Big 12 Championship.
Marcus Coleman (184) and Sam Schuyler (285) are both No. 2 seeds. Coleman enters his fifth Big 12 Championship with a career record of 12-7 in the tournament and logged his best finish, third, last season. Schuyler placed fourth at last year’s championship but is undefeated against league opponents this season.
Zach Redding (133), Paniro Johnson (149) and Yonger Bastida (197) all earned the No. 3 seed in their respective brackets. It marks Johnson’s first postseason and Redding’s second, and first since he placed third in the 2021 Big 12 Championship. This is Bastida’s second Big 12 Championship after placing fifth last season.
Jason Kraisser grabbed the No. 7 seed at 157 pounds and will make his postseason debut for the Cyclones. The transfer from Campbell did not place at the 2020 SoCon Championship.
Corey Cabanban (125), Casey Swiderski (141) and Julien Broderson (174) were all unseeded.
The Big 12 Championship will run March 4-5 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. Sessions 1-3 will be streamed via Big 12 Now on ESPN+ while the Finals will be televised on ESPNU.
