OBIT: Richard D. Chase Sr.

Dick passed away February 22, 2023, at The Good Samaritan Society in Algona at the age of 101 years.

A funeral service for Richard Chase Sr., 101, of Algona, will be held 10:30 AM , Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at First United Methodist Church in Algona. Burial will follow at East Lawn Cemetery in Algona. Visitation will take place 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday, February 27, at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Algona.

Richard Donald Chase, son of Russell H. and Janet C. (Brantner) Chase, was born April 20, 1921, in Pender, Nebraska. As a boy, he and his family, which included four brothers and two sisters, lived in the area of Omaha, Nebraska where Dick attended school.

He was united in marriage with Margaret Lorain Brown May 12, 1942, in Papillion, Nebraska. Dick enlisted in the United States Army in July of 1942 at Fort Crook, Nebraska. He was proud to be a World War II veteran. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant before his honorable discharge in October of 1945.

Dick and Margaret lived in Omaha and Mason City, before moving to Algona, Iowa in 1965. Together they raised three children. Richard was a grocer for 42 years at several stores over the years, including Hinky Dinky, Safeway, Fareway, and Dunn’s Sure Save. He was also the founder and producer of Countryside Barbeque Sauce.

In his spare time Dick enjoyed fishing, hunting, remodeling, and building things. He had a lifelong love for horses and enjoyed raising and riding them. His most proud accomplishment was being named Midwest Golden Glove boxing champion in 1942. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, and First United Methodist Church in Algona.

Dick passed away February 22, 2023, at The Good Samaritan Society in Algona at the age of 101 years.

Survivors include his daughter Crystal Winkler of Missouri Valley, Iowa; son Richard Chase Jr. and wife Karen of St. Benedict, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Margaret, in 2012, parents, six siblings, daughter Dale (Charles) Umbaugh, and grandson Bret Chase.
