College Wrestling: #3 Cyclones take down #20 Illinois, 21-13

AMES – No. 3 Iowa State (16-2, 7-0 Big 12) wrapped up its home dual season with a 21-13 win over No. 20 Illinois (6-7, 4-4 Big Ten) Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones went 6-0 at home this season and have won 29 of their last 31 duals overall with their only losses coming against No. 1 Penn State and No. 2 Iowa.

David Carr (165) and Marcus Coleman (184) had bonus point victories and the Cyclones edged the Illini in takedowns, 24-15.

Caleb Fuessley won the first match, 6-4, in sudden victory at 125 pounds. Both Fuessley and Maximo Renteria traded takedowns in the second and third period, respectively. In sudden victory, Fuessley countered a Renteria shot and registered the takedown at the 1:05 mark to pick up the win.

Casey Swiderski got back on track with a 10-7 win over Danny Pucino at 141 pounds. Swiderski won the takedown battle, 3-2, including a key third-period takedown to secure the win.

Paniro Johnson registered takedowns in all three periods, including three in the third, in a decisive 12-6 victory vs. Jake Harrier at 149 pounds.

It was another match of total domination for No. 2 David Carr at 165 pounds. Carr registered four takedowns and picked up a four-point near fall in a 16-2 victory over Anthony Federico. Carr raises his match winning streak to 25 dating back to last season and 10 of his 19 matches this year were bonus point victories.

At 184 pounds, No. 4 Marcus Coleman easily handled Dylan Connell in a 21-4 technical fall victory. Coleman was the aggressor in his final match in Hilton Coliseum, tallying five takedowns, a reversal and a pair of four-point near falls. His final takedown in the third period eventually ended the match when he turned Connell for his second set of back points.

No. 9 Sam Schuyler solidified the Cyclone victory with a 5-3 decision over Matt Wroblewski at 285. Schulyer had a pair of takedowns en route to his 14th win of the season.
