DUBUQUE — A trio of young Panthers picked up open titles on the mat this weekend as UNI’s Trever Anderson (125 pounds) and Ryder Downey (149 pounds) took first place in their respective weight classes at the Pat Flanagan Open at Loras College. Freshman Cory Land also scaled the podium with a second place finish at 133 pounds.
Anderson’s successful day opened with a pin of UW-Parkside’s Konstantinos Papadoulous just one minute, 15 seconds into his open match. The Ankeny, Iowa native picked up a second pin in the semifinals over Loras’ Wiley Jessup in 2 minutes, 10 seconds en route to a 6-0 decision over Luc Valdez (UW-Oshkosh). The win is Anderson’s first open title of his college career.
At 133 pounds, Land also opened the day with a pin, getting the fall against Justin Bradford (Indian Hills CC) in 2 minutes, 41 seconds before earning an 8-2 decision over Iowa’s Jace Rhodes in the semifinals. Land fell short of a first place finish in the finals, falling to Iowa’s Drake Ayala in a 7-2 decision. Land’s second place finish is his third top-two finish in open competition this year after winning at the Grand View Open and taking second place at the Cyclone Open.
Ryder Downey went a perfect 4-0 on Saturday in Dubuque at 149 pounds, securing a 22-5 tech fall against Kael Glenn (Ellsworth CC) and a 2 minute, 10 second pin of Patrick Campbell (Indian Hills CC) in his first two matches. The Indianola, Iowa native dominated Iowa Wesleyan’s Quinten Aney in a 17-1 tech fall in the semifinals before edging Iowa’s Joel Jesuroga in a 2-1 decision in the finals. Downey’s victory is his second open title this season after winning the Grand View Open title back in November.
