Michael G. Smith, 71, of Mason City, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2023 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, with his family by his side.

Michael G. Smith, 71, of Mason City, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2023 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, with his family by his side.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Thursday, January 26, 2023 at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St NE, Mason City with Pastor Jeff Gremmer officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood – St. Joseph Cemetery.

Military honors will be provided by the Mason City Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 25, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm and will resume one hour prior to Mike’s service at the funeral home on Thursday.

The son of Robert Smith and Helen (Pappas) Gray, Michael George was born in Mason City on June 19, 1951. He attended Grant and Monroe schools before graduating from Mason City High School with the class of 1970. Following graduation Mike enlisted in the United States Navy, honorably serving his country for 9 ½ years.

On April 21, 1973 he was united in marriage to Terry Hutzel in Mason City. Together they would be blessed with three children, John, Elizabeth, and James.

Mike loved spending time with his family and especially adored his six grandchildren; he was always their biggest supporter.

He was also an outdoors man who enjoyed spending as much time in nature as possible. He loved hunting, fishing, and camping and went at every opportunity.

For 27 years Mike was employed with IMI Cornelius before their closing and then worked at Cargill prior to his retirement at the age of 62.

Mike is survived by his wife, Terry Smith; children, John Smith, Elizabeth (Bradley) Bull, and James (Maggie) Smith; grandchildren, Connor (Bethany) Smith, Carter Smith, Cayla Smith, Braylan Bull, Blair Smith, and Norah Smith; Goddaughter, Tara Gast; siblings, Debra Harriman, Cindy Kephart, John (Julie) Frank, Mark (Julie) Frank, Ladell Overbeck, and Jerry Smith; brothers and sisters in law, Linda Raine, Donneta Lucas, Sandy (John) Firsching, Cherry Hutzel, Steve (Sherri) Hutzel, Donald (Susie) Hutzel, and Mike (Karen) Hutzel; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert (Mary) Smith and Helen (John) Frank; in laws, Don and Donna Hutzel; grandmother, Lizzie Pappas; siblings, Patty Jo Read and Leon Smith; brothers in law, David and Rick Hutzel; and nephew, Josh Frank.
