He especially loved watching his granddaughter Anna play basketball with Western Illinois. John also enjoyed “junking”; finding value in the little things and gardening. He worked often with his hands, be it woodworking, canning or making Christmas ornaments for his kids and grandkids. He was very involved with the First United Methodist Church. John was a proud member of their board of trustees. He would spend hours cracking walnuts for the other members of the church and raised a significant amount of money for them with his “junking”. His favorite sports teams included the Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Twins, and Minnesota Vikings.

John is survived by his wife, Kathryn; children, Christopher (Julia) Deets and their children, Andrew, Anna, and Alex; Bradly (Amber) Deets and their children, Maxwell, Hannah, and Sawyer; Amy Weitzel and her children, Zachary, Brandon, and Blake, (Special Friend Bill Wood), Renae (Dean) Stadtlander and their children, Tyler and Alex; Chad Kahler and his children, Mac, Samuel, and Kylie, Tonya (Tony) Spencer and their children, Tiffany and Taylor; great- grandchildren, Huxton, Emerson, Peyton, and River; sisters, Gwen Shackleton and Judith Schotanus, and Leanna (Steve) Anderson; as well as many other beloved nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.
