MASON CITY – NIACC freshman Fabian Steene set a NIACC high jump record and was selected as the ICCAC men’s track and field athlete of the week for the week of Jan. 9-15.

Steene, a freshman from Gothenburg, Sweden, set the NIACC men’s track and field indoor high jump record with a leap of 6 feet, 6 3/4 inches with his third place finish at the Wartburg College Chelsey Henkenius Open last Saturday.

Before Steene, Melvin Kipkemboi was the last NIACC men’s track and field athlete to earn the honor for the week of April 11-17, 2022.

Steene’s school record setting leap also qualified him for the NJCAA Division I national indoor meet.

Steene broke the 10-year old mark of 6-4 held by Jacob Gapp set at the University of Northern Iowa Panther Open in 2013.

Steene shared the ICCAC weekly award with Indian Hills’ sophomore Rivaldo Marshall.

NIACC returns to action Friday at the University of Northern Iowa Jack Jennett Invitational in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
