OBIT: Douglas O. Blanz

Douglas died Friday, January 6, 2023, at the Emmetsburg Care Center, at the age of 85.

Memorial services for Douglas Blanz will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at First Lutheran Church in Algona with Reverend Dave Grindberg presiding. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the services at the church.

Douglas Owen Blanz, son of Ralph and Helen (Smith) Blanz, was born July 10, 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended high school at St. Paul Johnson in Minnesota and graduated with the class of 1955. After high school he continued his education at the University of Minnesota graduating with his A.A degree in 1958, St. Cloud State University receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1960 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and he received his Master’s degree at the Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota in 1967. He also completed education programs for Electronic Guidance Fellowship the summer of 1973 in Louisville, Kentucky and for six months on Electronic Technology at Hibbing Technical College.

On September 17, 1960, he married Helen Hill. The couple divorced in 2008.

On March 3, 2009, he married Mary Clausen. The couple divorced in 2022.

Douglas also had many hobbies such as: singing in the choir, participating in amateur radio, woodworking, being outdoors in the mountains, and bird watching. He enjoyed spending time with his family at the cabin in Colorado being with nature.

Douglas was part of the Spirituals Project Choir in Colorado. He was also a member of First Lutheran Church in Algona.

Douglas died Friday, January 6, 2023, at the Emmetsburg Care Center, at the age of 85.

He is survived by his first wife Helen Blanz and second wife Mary Clausen; daughter, Barbara (Mark) Bronson; step-children, Christina (Jeff Buchholtz) Clausen, Andrea (Nick Moore) Moore-Clausen, and John David (Amanda) Clausen; grandchildren, Sarah Dreyer, John Buchholz, Aiden Clausen, Henry Moore, Levi Clausen, Anabelle Clausen, and Vaughan Clausen; and brother, Gordan Blanz.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Robert and Jerry Blanz; and daughter Susan Davidson.
