DES MOINES – An Iowa DOT officer was injured in rear-end collision this week, and the state vehicle was destroyed in the crash.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, on an unspecified Iowa roadway. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation:

“Tuesday we had an officer who was struck from behind while in his vehicle providing traffic control for a crash. He was treated and released for his injuries. There were winter weather conditions at the time, but we do not know at this time if it played a role in the incident.”

The DOT reminded drivers “to slow down and focus on the task of driving, especially when the conditions may be less than perfect.”

The offending vehicle was likely a semi, when the DOT vehicle damage is examined. This year, so far, just one person has died on Iowa roadways. In 2022, 338 people died in crashes on Iowa roads. In 2021, 256 people died.
