Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday at the Mallard United Methodist Church. Burial will take place at Washington Cemetery in Havelock. Visitation will be 3:00 – 5:00 PM Sunday at the church with a Masonic service starting at 5:00 PM.

Ghervus Lee Goodchild was born on June 26, 1931 at Curlew, IA to Fred and Dorothy (Younggreen) Goodchild. He attended country school and Mallard Community School graduating in 1950. Grandpa loved to tell the grandkids how he rode his pony to school.

After graduating he joined his father in farming and raising purebred Hampshire hogs and received numerous awards at county, state, and national levels for many years. It was well known he had an excellent eye for picking out show pigs.

He married the love of his life, Beverly Jean Hynes on July 27, 1956 at Spencer, IA and they lived on a farm ½ miles north of Mallard for their entire lives where they raised their 6 sons – Koy, Klint, Kent, Kal, Klay, and Kip.

Besides farming and raising hogs he loved baseball and boxing. There were many stories told about his Mallard town baseball team. It was not uncommon to have the boys settle their “disputes” in the boxing ring.

Dad was famous for saying “I have a job for you and it will only take “10 minutes” and the sons and grandsons always were glad to help knowing it was going to take at least an hour minimum.
