OBIT: Durwood L. Nelson

Durwood Nelson died Thursday, December 29, 2022, at Kossuth Regional Health Center, at the age of 82.

A funeral service for Durwood Nelson, 82, of Algona will be held Friday, January 6, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Grace Church in Algona. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Whittemore American Legion. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Thursday at Grace Church in Algona and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Durwood LeRoy Nelson was born April 29, 1940, in Algona, son of Francis and Helen (St. John) Nelson. He grew up an spent his entire life in Algona graduating from Algona High School in 1958. He then served his country in the Army National Guard for six years. Durwood worked for 7-Up Bottling Co. for many years and then worked for Blacktop Services in Humboldt. He has worked at Johnston Auto Parts for the past 17 years recently retiring because of health reasons. He made many friends working.

On July 25, 2008, Durwood was married to Vicki McConnell at Grace Church in Algona. He enjoyed hunting and fishing especially prairie dog hunting with Vicki. He loved being his brother’s sidekick carving wood at many fairs and events. He also enjoyed working on cars being very fond of a 1962 Corvette he owned.

Durwood Nelson died Thursday, December 29, 2022, at Kossuth Regional Health Center, at the age of 82.

He is survived by his wife Vicki of Algona; two children, Katie Murray of Armstrong and George (Tammy) Murray of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Patrick Murray of Mankato, MN, Amanda (Devon) Murray of Norwalk, Tanner Murray of Des Moines, and Noah Murray of Des Moines, two great-grandchildren, Bryson and Bowen Murray of Norwalk and a brother, Duane (Dorene) Nelson of Jackson, MN;. He is also survived by a niece and 3 nephews who called him “Uncle Dub”, Todd (Brenda) Nelson of Hico TX, Carrie (Jerry) Oliver of Bancroft, Ryan (Jill) Nelson of Whittemore, and Nicole Hall of Jacskon, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents.
