PORTLAND, Ore. - No. 4/5 Iowa State defeated Michigan State, 80-49, at the Phil Knight Invitational on Thanksgiving afternoon.

PORTLAND, Ore. – No. 4/5 Iowa State defeated Michigan State, 80-49, at the Phil Knight Invitational on Thanksgiving afternoon.

With the win, Iowa State improves to 5-0. and the Spartans fall to 6-1 this season, snapping their six-game winning streak.

Iowa State’s Stephanie Soares scored 23 points with 11 rebounds and six blocks. Big 12 player of the week Ashley Joens scored 8 points.

Michigan State had two players in double figures led by sophomore guard DeeDee Hagemann, who scored 14 points to go along with three assists.

It was a back-and-forth affair early on with MSU jumping out to an early 8-6 lead behind four early points by Hagemann. The Cyclones responded with a 10-0 run to take a 16-8 advantage with 2:24 left in the quarter. Iowa State kept MSU off the scoreboard for nearly four minutes. The Spartans trailed the Cyclones 18-12 after the first quarter.

Iowa State scored the first five points of the second quarter to open up a 23-12 lead. The Spartans shooting woes continued in the second quarter, shooting on eight percents in the period. Michigan State went nearly minutes without a field goal.

No. 5 Iowa State moves on to the Phil Knight Invitational Championship game, taking on No. 8 North Carolina on Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. Central on ESPN2.
